How is the AHOI-mod related to the WW1 mod? Empty How is the AHOI-mod related to the WW1 mod?

Hey guys!

I'm a bit confused currently. The URL says ahoi-mod, the forum is titled AHOI-mod and yet there is quite some discussion going on about the WW1 mod. I'm not complaining, I think the WW1 mod is a great project and I'll be very happy once it becomes playable. However, I'd like someone (Chromos?) to explain if AHOI-mod and WW1 mod are going to merge, or if this forum is actually dedicated to the development of the WW1 mod, or if both WW1 mod and AHOI-mod are going to be developed in this forum as separate projects.
So, please enlighten me!

Thanks,
hiec

Hi hiec,

the forum name was choosen by Kadanz as he heard I would like to have a forum.

And I posted my AHOI-Mod then of course here too.

Some history:
I had in mind long ago to expand the AHOI-Treasure-Mod with the 1001-techs project with WW1 and "early-cold war" timeline. So a Mod where technically the prerequisites for ~1900 up to ~1970 are given.
This is a techtree and units problem. As you have to tink about unit progression etc..

Events are easier to change for each time period but the units are a "real" problem at least if you want to have the statistic not cluttered and so on.

So as I wanted to earn money with modding back then, I stopped the 1001 tech approach and switched to "easier to sell" stuff for Std-HOI3. Something that could be sold like Devildreads CWOWW2 or Danevangs Vicky2 Mod. That was the birth of the widescreen GUI for the AHOI-Treasure.
The wood/steel look and additional work like we have now to some extend in the AHOI-Mod was planned for a small DLC. Also the production-AI Mod was planned to be sold. But well, I failed to attract Paradox or they just don't like me. Whatever.
So I did spend quite some time modding and not earning money. Now money was running low in my pocktes and I dropped the commercial approach.

This freed me also from not taking the work from others into the Mod.
And thus I started to merge all I had already done, dropped the old "GEM-approach"(Modular system) and renamed the whole project AHOI-Mod.

Because of having to work again, I also dropped the idea of the AHOI-Mod including the former 1001 tech project.

But I thought that my already done work could help maybe to reanimate the old WW1-Mod over at the Paradox-Forum.
I would have helped to get it going there. And while browsing the old dead subforum I saw that PD-DK posted he will not work anymore on the Mod and is more interested in modding DH/Aod.
So I tought then I could take ownership of that Forum and have an easier time to arrange/organize the work.
Well, then it was assumed from the Moderation that I would "abuse" the WW1 subforum for the AHOI-Mod.
First answer to my request was, that it would not be to my adavantage to have full access to that subforum.
Then I asked why "advantage" and why "AHOI-Mod" and get as answer they think I would like to merge the AHOI-Mod into this subforum wich I denied in further PN's serveral times.
But they still replied then to me that they think I would just abuse it and that is not what they would like to see..
Well, guess what. I replied that I will no longer ask to get any more rights or access there.
Should that subforum rest in peace..

Also while I had this PN's about the WW1 subforum, there was already some people who showed interest in helping doing a WW1 mod and also in helping doing the AHOI-Mod.

18-10-2011 12:39 First post that I offer my 1001-tech tree and help for reanimation WW1.
31-10-2011 11:15 Post that I wouldn't get access to the subforum and I think that it might be good to have an own fourm for such a big project.
02-11-2011 18:16 Post that someone was so nice to inform Kadanz that I would like to have an own forum..

And here we are..

After thinking about all the work that would make a complete new WW1 techtree, and having on the other hand the possibility to fully use the already done work of the 1001 techs and thus maybe have later a Mod that incorporates the possibility to play WW1 up to WW2 brought me back to my initial intention of the Ahoi-Treasure-Mod. Include fully the WW1 timeline with the already done work of the 1001 tech project.

But that is only my "dream/opinion". To have a Mod wich allows you to play from WW1 to WW2 timeline and beyond.
So I already wrote now several times that If people here want to have WW1 only, then we'll do that. I wrote it as an answer to helepolis here in more detail:
helepoils post - ideas-about-ww1-mod

7) First, that would be a dream come through if we all want to go that route later. Second, I would still first make WW1 working(!) difference would be only that we could incorporate the already done tech tree work as it already includes WW1 and ww2. And I like to point out that it was already much work to bring it up like it is now..
For the timeline it would propably be divided first like in Darkest Hour. A (or more) WW1 scenario(s) and a (or more) WW2 scenario(s). The tricky part is the intermediate time. But that would also be a true outstanding work if we get that to work.
And, to pick up your example, if there is no Ger after WW1 anymore, then we would of course have no WW2 like in reality. But thats the way it is in a changed history. Maybe we see then a hot war between SU and Allies..
If people insist on having a WW1 only Mod, then I would have to create a new tech tree, wich is ok for me, but it is harder to expand it again later on due to how the engine works. F.e. it is "easy" to design units for WW1. But if you want to use these types of units also later in WW2(Techtree comes into play here as it affects the units in many ways..) you would design them(and the techtree..) maybe different to get around some problems that occur for such a long time period. I have spend aleady quite some time to get around such problems. And I won't expand a WW1 only Mod tech tree to another timeline later on if now we decide to have it only for WW1.

The AHOI-Mod will not be affected by this and get maybe later then the work from WW1 included. It will be more work, but as I'm doing that not alone, I'm of course open to the ideas/opinions of others.

I think if it will be two seperate Mods, then I'll split it up further and give WW1 an own subfourm here.

And as Yazem already asked me for putting up my work on WW1 so far, I posted it under my latest project name "Hearts of Steel". And I'm open for suggestions for a name of either WW1 only Mod or one wich includes both timeframes.

Next week Yazem will be back and hopefully can say what it his opinion on this.

Also I would like to read more opinions on this.
Do WW1 only, or do only WW1 first and have the possibility of WW1 and WW2.. Smile

Hope that brought some light into this.

Best regards,
Chromos

Thanks, it definitely alleviated my confusion. I'm also interested in other opinions on this topic, especially from people involved in the development of the WW1 mod. What do you guys think?

The more extensive the TT is the fewer unique is it for a specific timeframe.

In Darkest Hour we have had the same ambition to create a TT that covers 1900-1970. In effect there's a lack of 'WW1-feeling' now. some specific units are abstracted in a more generic way. The diversity of military units and technique differs from timeframe to timeframe. An extensive TT would give up this uniqueness, also beacause you had bring techs of every timeframe in balance to each other.

I would like to know what is missing.
In my approach, I think I took care much more in detail as DH of units being able to be different and also able to represent the timeframe right.
Thats also only possible because HOI3 is different in some ways as the HOI2 engine(even if already changed much like in DH but not in regard to how units are used..)

With the 1001 techs we have around the same amount of techs available for the timeline of WW1-WW2 as we have now available in Std HOI3 for the timeframe of WW2..
The problem here are more the units. And for that we could use many different ones, or more generic ones(for the sake of a not cluttered techtree) but have then a more clever/tricky component system, wich I/we have in my opinion. Wink
It is "similar" somehow to that one Thaegen uses in his VorwärtsPanzers! for DI:G or now in the RPM-Mod.
The trick to get around all regarded problems is the component system of the units of HOI3.

You could check out the "Hearts of Steel" Stuff for my work I did already for WW1 with the big tech tree or just see the pics here:
Big tech tree overview

Also to view in the Paradox-WW1 Subforum.

The hearts of steel also includes most of the intended units. But the tree is just a "dummy" right now. Same to the Units..
